Once we got here, we were blessed with a headboard, but our knees/shin tops soon found out that the attached sideboards were not a good option for us. That, and Em had managed to bang her head on the corners of them, and smash her fingers into the doors more than once. So, I finally got time alone with my husband and we went shopping. We found a wonderful fabric we both loved, and he had time to make the headboard out of 'reclaimed' wood from our shipping crates. It took us about 4 hours all total to make this, and we LOVE IT!!! I think at least an hour was just stringing the buttons through the holes, but it was worth it. The question is this: does there need to be a second row of buttons at the top of the pillow line? Take the poll to help us decide... we have the buttons and the holes are drilled into the wood, we (okay, I) weren't sure last night, so I left them off.

Murray Update
I have been getting many questions about Murray lately. Murray, whom everyone has officially decided is a boy (no confirmation from the ultra sound or doctor... don't get too excited). It seems that the doctor has once again moved up the due date from a Friday to a Monday, but as I've said before, I'm still just praying for some time before October. I learned my lesson with getting too anxious and listening to the doctors tell me when Em 'should' come by, and that got me into a world of hurt- literally (I despise pitocin!). So, that said, we're now somewhere around 24 weeks, which means I'm within sight of the third trimester. Honestly though, I'm so busy with just keeping up with Em and my other responsibilities, I hardly notice I'm pregnant until something hurts or doesn't fit. I tried to suck in the belly (which came out of nowhere in the last few weeks) but there was zero change from sucking in and not. I guess it was pointless but I had to try.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling up for Em's scheduled party for so many reasons. I felt rather crushed that Em's first birthday would be celebrated on the wrong day (we moved the party to Tuesday) and that she would only get Mom and Dad. Then I remembered that my first birthday was just my sister, my mom and I with my a few grandparents because my mom's father passed away. I have this great picture of me with a HUGE red candle (the kind you have on the table at Christmas) because my mom wasn't up to getting the 'normal' cake candle. So, I figured I survived and actually look fondly at those pictures, so Em would too. We kept with tradition and used the candles that are for power outages and even went for the easy clean up (thanks to the Bernsdorf family) of chocolate pudding, chocolate graham crackers and melted marshmallows (how else do you get a candle that big to stay standing?!). Em wasn't too sure about not being allowed to dive right in- such an impatient personality this little one has when it comes to food!

However, she LOVED the marshmallow side of
the candle- you'd think this kid had never had sugar before... oh, wait, she hadn't!
She also had a great time using the pudding as finger paint (an added bonus was that we found out pudding is a natural wood polish).
She couldn't go to bed without a huge hug for Daddy, even if she did look like a chocolate dipped Oreo!
We had a lot of fun with just the three of us, trying to Skype family back in the States (not too successful- weather wasn't that fantastic here I guess) and just hanging out.
I think I now understand why so many people choose low-key birthdays: they just lend themselves to enjoying the moment rather than running around. We got some great video, which is rare for us since we ALWAYS forget to record her (we're horrible parents, we know), and we had fun not having to worry about presents getting messy or anything like that. I hope Tuesday evening with our budding South African friends will be just as fun and just as enjoyable as pudding on the coffee table for three was!
Disclaimer: No clothing was harmed in the making of this birthday- it was all washable! Yeah!!!

Tomorrow
For those of you who have been checking, with no changes to the blog in over a week, I apologize. There have been some issues lately that have made adult conversation (because that's what this time of sharing is for me) impossible. Last Tuesday, my computer took a nosedive for the worse. It always had character, like everything of mine, and that's the way I like it. Sort of like how Bertha (my old grey Honda) would turn her windshield wipers on if you hit a set or train tracks, a bump, or just because... those are things that make me feel justified in naming my 'toys'. Todd thinks it's crazy, but I love the character. Anyways, character or no, the computer decided he was done with me. I took it in and was given an estimate of a reasonable amount up to a new computer amount. Needless to say, I kept the computer and decided I'd ventured into a techie world that required my husband. That was when I first started feeling odd. The rest of that day and the next, I was tired and achy... that never bodes well. Wednesday, I dropped Todd off at the airport for his last planned trip away from home. He was off to Switzerland and would be gone for six days. When he first booked the trip, we were both so concerned about him being here for Em's first birthday, we didn't even think about Mother's Day, until it was too late. Oh well. So he was off and I woke up Thursday morning wishing I could just go into a 24 hour coma. I officially had the flu and my daughter didn't. It was awful, but we gutted through, and thankfully on Friday, Rosina, my South African grandma, came over and took care of me just like my Grams from home would have. She took care of Em and I, as well as the workers who decided that was the PERFECT day to fix the window that's been broken since we got here. She took care of it all, and the house was clean. I swear, she has super powers! So back to the story, this whole time, I'd also noticed an old injury creeping up on me. In 7th grade I bruised/fractured my tailbone. Seeing as how they could do nothing, x-rays seemed pointless to me. I just listened to how to care for it, and took the warning that this would most likely plague me for years, which it has, but no more than any other injury. So when I was down with the flu, I felt the discomfort from that, but I was laying on the couch most of the time- no problem. I'd be healed up in a few days.
Sunday afternoon at some point, Em woke up from her nap and I began the monumental task of getting up the stairs to change her and bring her back down (no I didn't go to church, I was an achy heathen at home, celebrating the Sabbath with my daughter). What I didn't realize was that Lani, who had had very little interaction with anyone other than Em since Thursday morning, was feeling neglected and decided to side-step the gate up the stairs. I was half way down the stairs when I realized, a little too late, that my hyper dog was between my legs wanting attention. Well, she got it in the form or all three of us backsliding down half a dozen stairs, Em scared to tears, me wishing I had the energy to throw the dog from the stairs out the back door because my backside hurt so badly, and Murray loving the ride and letting me know it was time to do it all again! So what started as bum annoyance was now full-fledged pain. No computer, no husband, my daughter running all over the house and me sitting on a bag of frozen pea's- Happy Mother's Day!
That pretty much brings us up to date. The computer is going to techie hospital today, my bum is still sore beyond words and Em turns one in less than 36 hours (SA time). It is unbelievable to me... that she's so big, that I'm so sore, and that the dog has already added chapters to the Lani & Me book we're putting together.... I tell you all this not so you can say, "Shame, poor girl," but rather count your blessings today, and when something goes wrong, smile or laugh and remember, it could be so much worse... you could be sitting on frozen peas with me!

Bums, Bumps, and Blasts
Warning: The following story has extreme sarcasm and may not be suitable for young readers.
Todd is in Switzerland at the Eurasia Regional Office. He left yesterday and I took him to the airport. Now, I'm comfortable driving on one road here in Johannesburg. It's a long road, but still, that's about all I know. Anything else is totally out of my realm of knowledge. That, mixed with the fact that this would be my second time driving from the airport (the first time was Monday- don't remember much since since it was so early in the morning), I was slightly nervous about getting back in one piece. Since the highways around here resemble the 405 or the 210 in LA on Friday during rush hour, we left early, so that I could avoid 'rush hour' here (it starts at 4!). Todd was dropped off by 2:45 and I was beginning to feel fairly confident that I could actually pull this off. The only thing I forgot was that, while I loved playing sports growing up, there are some hold-over side effects that I don't love. One, being the fact that at least once a year I bruise my tailbone. It happened when Em was born, and I must have done something in the last few days to do it again. So, driving where I don't know where I'm going, no GPS or Todd to call if I get lost (and I forgot my cell phone- yikes!), and a bum bum... I get behind the drivers seat. My bum immediately started hurting since I was stuck in one position because of the clutch, and then, we hit the first of (no exaggeration here people) 20 speed bumps... and they weren't even the SAME! Some were huge and others were spiky. It was... painful to say the least, but I figured I'd be home in half an hour, so it would be okay. Then, traffic stopped. I don't mean we were all sitting there idling waiting for some stalled car to pull to the side. Engines were off, people walking down the middle of the freeway stopped. Em had a wonderful conversation with the guy in the small truck next to her, which was nice because it kept her busy. See, I didn't plan on being gone too long, so I didn't bring toys. Cars started moving again, so I figured there was an accident and we were free. NO. Just as I was getting into second gear, two things happened: first, we stopped again and second, I past a sign that read "Blasting 6 May at 1500"... One blast, okay, my bum could handle this, and we'd get home soon. Two hours later, and no less than half a dozen blasts later, we pulled off the freeway onto the road I knew. We were still about 20 minutes from home, but it didn't matter, I was so happy that I could see the end in sight, my bum would be able to get some Tylenol soon, and I didn't have to drive along that freeway or deal with blasting again... or until Monday. So, the moral of the story, don't drive your husband to the airport with a bum bum when you have to go over speed bumps, or when there's blasting... and definately not when you have to deal with all three at the same time!

Camp Grounds
Okay, so we were told that we were going 'camping' with a group from the church. We were going to leave for the camp site Sunday and be back on Friday evening: 6 days. For the price (including food and all), I was expecting a hole in the ground for a bathroom, crumby scenery and lots of spiders and bugs, with PB&J for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. What we got was unbelievable. We stayed in Blythe River Canyon on the grounds of a private chain of nature resorts. There were bath tubs (huge bathtubs!) and wonderful showers. Everything was impeccably kept up and since it was a nature reserve, there were wandering kudu and springbok (both deer-like), baboons and monkeys... it was unbelievable. (I know, suffering for Jesus in South Africa, right?) Em loved the monkeys best. More stories to come, but I didn't want to overwhelm the first day back.

This is the view from our front tent flap... this mountain was INCREDIBLE!
Em and Rizea hanging out at pre-breakfast. Most of us were still in our pajamas at 10 am, but that's what holiday is for, right?
